The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, November 19, 1908. THE SECOND BALLOT.
Thu contest for the election of a member to represent Manawatu as a result of the Second Ballot will take place on Tuesday next between Messrs John Stevens (Government candidate) and Edward Newman (Opposition). At the first Ballot Mr Newman secured a majority over Mr Stevens of 321. If is necessary that supporters of both candidates should record their votes even though it should cause a little self-sacrifice on their part. The views of both candidates have been published at length in these columns but electors will be given another opportunity ot hearing the candidates before Tuesday. Mr Stevens will address the electors in the Foxton Public Hall on Friday night and Mr Newnlan will follow on Monday in the same hall. If the electors are satisfied with the administration of the Ward Government then their duty is clear and their vote should be recorded for Mr Stevens, independent of the personal element. If, on the other hand, they ar; of opinion that a brake is required on the Slate coach and the leaders require to be kept well in hand, then it is their duty to strengthen the Opposition. It is unnecessary for us to recapitulate the political beliefs pf either candidate as they are already wellknown. In order to allow people to record their votes on polling day shops will be closed at 1 p.m., and factories must allow their employees an hour off for the same purpose.
