LOCAL OPTION POLL.

Manawattt—Lseat Option.

Considerable interest was taken in the local Option Poll and it was thought that No-license would come very close to being carried in the Manawatu. The No-liceuse Party had engaged the services of an organiser some three mouths ago, but despite this fact tehre was a lack of proper and systematic work done, and too much was left to spasmodic platform work, II the reform party desire a win next time they must conduct the campaign on very different lines. However, the fight has just commenced in earnest and the Nolicense party have no need to feel disappointed at the result. Foxton’s vote this year showed a large increase for continuance over the figures for 1905. In 1905 continuance an increase 1905 Nolicense polled 328 and in 1908 345 J an increase of only 17. This time ; the trade had a majority of 75 over No-license. The trade worked j for all it was worth and the ‘ ‘ gag ” about Foxton’s ruin if No-license were carried had the necessary effect upon a large number of voters who have not made a study of the question. * Another ridiculous rumour was circulated to the effect that a depot would be established on the border of 'the electorate. The trade engaged vehicles and saw that their supporters, iwho had been well canvassed, came to the poll. Up to the present we have not been able to ascertain the correct results but will publish them together with a comparison as early as possible. Taking the Dominion as a whole the No-liceuse Party has increased its lead over the trade by thousands. All places that had previously carried No-License have voted byincreased majorities for non-restor-ation of licenses .and if the present returns are correct eight new electorates have gone dry, namely, Wellington South, Wellington suburbs, Hutt, Masterton, Bruce, Eden, Ohinetnnru, and Manakau. Reduction has been carried in the cities of Auckland and Dunedin, Geraldine, Kaiapoi, Waitaki, Parnell, Chalmers, and Thames. NoLicense will now obtain in fourteen electorates. The following are the results:—

Timaru : Continuance, 2875 ; duction, 2848 ; no-license, 3452; . Clutha: For restoration, 994; against 1826. Bruce : Continuance, 1868 ; reduction, 2434 ; no-liceuse, 2968. No-license carried. Twenty permits are to come in but they cannot effect the result. Hawke’s Bay ; Continuance, 3040 ; reduction, 1497 ; no-license, 2469. Franklin: Continuance, 1782; reduction, 1809 ; uo-license, 2418.
