METHODIST S.S. ANNIVERSARY.

The anniversary services in connection with the Methodist Sunday School were held on Sunday in the Masonic Hall and were well attended, particularly the evening service when the hall was filled to the doors. A special feature of the services was the singing by the children who had been trained by the Rev. Mr Mairs who, was complimented on all sides upon the excellent result of his labours. The morning and evening services were conducted by the Rev. Frank Isitt, of Wellington, and in the afternoon by Mr D. W. Row, M.A. (Palmerston), who gave a capital address to the children, drawing some very valuable lessons from nature. The Rev. Mr Isitt delivered a stirring address in support of No-Ricense at the evening meeting, and dealt with the condition of Clutha before and after the carrying of No-License. He also referred to a mother’s letter published by the opponents of No-License to the effect that her son had been demoralised by drink since living in a No-License area, viz., Ashburton. The speaker stated that the boy had been in the habit of drinking intoxicating liquor in a license area. He was known to have been the worse for liquor at 12 years of age and used to be sent to fetch beer and was accustomed to drink it on the way and dilute the remainder ot the contents with water. The lad had acquired a taste for liquor before ever No-License was carried, yet the trade put this awful example down to the effects of NoLicense. The circulation of this statement by the trade, said the speaker, was a “damnable lie!” The speaker said that his main work for years had been “ chasing lies circulated by the opponents of No-License.” A most enjoyable tea and concert was held last night, a report of which is crowded out of this issue.
