TRAM EXTENSION TO BULLS.

The Engineer’s Report

At Wednesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, the extension of the tram from Sanson to Bulls was further discussed. It was pointed out that if the tram were extended from the Port of Foxton to Bulls it would confer greater benefits to settlers all along the line.

Mr. Fulton, C.E., reported on the proposed extension as follows: —He proposed that the line should be laid along the north side of the bridge road, crossing to the south side of the road again at the Bulls end of the bridge, and rising up the cliff near Bulls, where the tramway would have to cross to the south side of the road and continue a sufficient distance there on the level to make room tor the terminal siding, south of the bridge. The line would start two miles 30 chains from Sanson, would be 56 chains to the south end of the bridge, chains to the north end, 1 mile 41 chains to the top of Bulls cutting, and 1 mile 51 chains to the terminus in Bulls, where the siding would be located. The flooring of the bridge would be suitable for the proposed railway traffic, provided that no engine heavier than the Weka was used nor any other rolling stock carrying loads heavier than 2} tons on each wheel, and speed of train did not exceed five miles an hour. Estimated cost The weight of a train on the bridge would strain the structure up to the maximum that it was designed to carry with the usual factor of safety. The Council considered the report in committee, and on resuming the chairman reported that it had been resolved to inform the Bulls Town Board that the Council is willing to extend the tramway into Bulls providing other local bodies agree to assist. Foxton Borough Council, Rangitikei County Council and Bulls Town Board, were mentioned as contributing bodies.
