FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: —His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower Esq), Crs Coley, Gray, Baker, Hennessy and Jenks. Apologies were received from Crs Frankland, Stiles, Shadbolt and Wilson.
The Agricultural Department notified that African Boxthorn had been included in the 3rd schedule of the Noxious Weeds’ Act.
The poundkeeper reported that 31 head of cattle and 27 horses had been impounded by the ranger during the month and three horses by settlers. "Driving fees amounting to £1 14s had been collected. The Overseer and Inspector of Nuisances reports were adopted. Accounts amounting t02,£i03 12s 2d were passed for payment.
It was decided to have the buildings in Victoria Park painted as requested by the Athletic Club. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Coley, that in order to protect the legal rights of the ratepayers under the gas works agreement the Town Clerk be instructed to send a formal legal notice to the Foxton Gas Proprietory notifying the failure to supply gas within dates set out in the agreement. The motion passed on July 20th deciding to place the Main Street lamps in the centre of the street was rescinded and the following resolution was passed : Proposed by Cr Hennessy, seconded by Cr Baker that the lamps be placed on the corner of Main and the following streets, Union, Cook, Wharf, Hall, Clyde and Avenue, and that overhanging arc lamps be attached to the present posts. The Public Works’ Committee reported that they bad inspected the lamps and it would be necessary to purchase 5 new posts and it was decided to get 5 telephone posts from Wellington,
The Reserves Committee were appointed to visit the old library cottage and to get all necessary repairs carried out. It was decided that the Council grant the use of the Council Chambers for polling booth at the general election at a rent to be fixed by the Town Clerk.
A record of the date of the first lighting of coal gas was ordered to be recorded in the minute book.
The Council rose at 9.20 p.m,
