The cruiser Gladiator, which was sunk off the Isle of Wight as the result of a collision with the American liner St. Paul, has been refloated. The pumps, however, are still inadequate to cope with the water in the ’midship section. The Government will devote 23 days to the consideration of the Licensing Bill in the House of Commons. A European coachman and a native groom have been removed from the Khedive’s Palace suffering from plague. Eondon, October 4.
A special correspondent, referring to the floods, describes Haidarabad as a “ black grave.” Six hundred corpses were removed from the slush on Thursday in one spot, and 100 on Friday. The correspondent computes the death roll at 50,000, and damage at Eondon, October 4.
There is a remarkable entente and some talk of an alliance between Turkey and Greece. Striking demonstrations have taken place at Constantinople in connection therewith. Reuter states that the men employed on the Algerian section of the Paris - Eyons - Mediterranean railway struck, owing to the dismissal of the two conveners of a meeting of railwaymen which resolved to desert or refuse to serve in war time, to oppose the transport of troops to the frontier in war time, and to favour general strikes in peace time. The meeting was held at the instance of the railway men’s national syndicate.
