THE GAS WORKS.
Opening Ceremony ToMorrow.
Messrs Norwood and Pearson, of Wellington, the contractors for the gas works at Foxton, handed over the works to the proprietary on Thursday, and the gas is to be turned on for the first time tomorrow evening. The official opening will lake place to-morrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. The syndicate at the back of the enterprise is constituted mostly of Wellington business men. They have secured a concession to light the town and supply the inhabitants of the borough with coal gas for a period of 15 years from April 8 last, and are to adhere to the following standard rates: —For ordinary consumption, ios per 1000 cubic feet; for power, 7s per. 1000 cubic feet; for heating and cooking, 7s 6d per 1000 cubic feet. The borough is to pay a uniform price of 7s 6d per rooo feet of gas. The plant for the works was supplied by Messrs Newton, Chambers, and Co., of the Thorneycliffe Ironworks, Sheffield, the sub-contractors being Messrs. Bryan, Donkin and Co., of Sheffield (exhauster), and Gibbous Bros., of Dudley, England (retort and ironwork). Mr. Heyes, local manager, has supervised the laying of the mains aud house connections. A number of house and street lamp connections have yet to be made. The number of services are about 150. We are asked to state that, should the weather be unfavourable, the ceremony will take place in the N. Z. Shipping Co.’s dumping shed. .Afternoon tea provided.
