HARD LUCK.
Palmerston N,, Sept. 30
The adverse operation of the clauses in the butchers’ award was shown in the case of a recent arrival from England, a youth of Tg years of age- He arrived in Palmerston a few days ago, destitute, but an appeal to the Salvation Army authorities resulted in work being found for him at a butcher’s shop at 2os per week. The employer also promised a muchneeded outfit. The youth, however, had barely commenced work before the Inspector of Factories enforced the Arbitration Coj/') award, which stipulated for a wage ot 30s, and the new-comer, who is an iron worker by trader was thrown on to his own resources again, the employer being unable to afford payment of 30s a week to a green hand.
