RECITAL
The recital organised by the Rev. Mr Mairs, in aid of the funds of the local Methodist Church, took place in the Masonic Hall last night, and despite counter attractions, was very well attended, and a most enjoyable time was spent. The programme was provided by Mr Hicks (editor of the Free Lance, Wellington), the Rev. Mr Simms (Wellington), elocutionists; Misses Barley (Palmerston) and E. Pimbery and Mr H. Signal (Wellington), vocalists. The last-named, who is a son of our esteemed townsman, also provided the instrumental portion of the programme, and opened with a pianoforte solo. The Rev. Mr Mairs presided. Most of the recitations contributed were not new to a Foxton audience, but they lost none of their freshness at the hands of the talented elocutionists. Mr Hicks recited “Bill Adams,” ‘ ‘ How McDougall topped the Score,” “ Trouble in • the Amen Corner,” the “ Battle of Camperdown,” and “Waterloo Bridge” ; and the Rev. Mr Simms “ One Day Solitary,” “ Firing Butter,” “ Look Out Mountain,” reading “ How Jimmy minded the Baby,” “The First Word,” “Rocket’s Christmas,” and “Hast Thou been through Purgatory ?” Miss Barley contributed “ Dolly’s Revenge ” and “May Morning,” and Miss Embury sang “My Treasure,” “The Belter Land,” and another ; Mr Signal sang “Mighty Deep,” and acted as accompanist, throughout the programme. On the motion of Mr Stiles, seconded by Mr Walker, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the contributors, which was carried by acclamation. The singing of the National Anthem brought the proceedings to a close.
