AMERICAN POLITICS.
New York, September 27
Mr Hearst has published additional letters showing that eminent Republican and Democratic politicians tendered legislative services to financial corporations upon the basis of financial support.
The disclosure has evoked frantic expressions of public disgust. Senator Foraker has declared that Mr Taft consorted with Standard Oil magnates, and that President Roosevelt’s conduct since the charges were made indicates a guilty conscience.
The Democrate accuse Cornelius Bliss, treasurer of the Republican National Party, on behalf of Mr Cortelyou (U.S.A. Treasurer), chairman of the Republican National Committee, of levying a contribution of £20,000 sterling upon Rogers aud Archbold, representing the Standard Oil, on the understanding that the administration act less harshly towards the corporation. The Democrats admit that Mr Roosevelt directed the committee to return the money but say the money was spent nevertheless, aud a little later the Standard Oil Company was requested to furnish ,£50,000 more. Mr Rogers declined, intimating that he never received back the £20,000, aud accused President Roosevelt of knowing that that sum was not only accepted, but used.
Mr Haskell has resigned the treasurership of. the Democratic National Committee and the Governorship of Oklahama, but he denies that the resignation amounts to an admission that President Roosevelt’s and Mr Hearst’s accusations are correct.
