The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, September 26, 1908. THE DOMINION DAY MED ADS.
The loug-looked-for Dominion Day medals were unostentationsly distributed among the children attending the local State School yesterday. The ceremony was not accompanied by eloquent addresses from prominent townsmen; no saluting the flag; no cadets in uniform—which, by the way reminds us that our school cadet corps is a very half-dead-and-alive contingent, a typical awkward squad —in fact, no nothing. The teaching staff and children were apparently overcome at the sight of the cheap and trashy mementos of a great event in the history of our country. It is hoped the children will not look a gift horse in the mouth, but will say, in the orthodox manner, we will not
look upon its intrinsic value, but shall hand this something-lighter-thantin thing down to our children’s children, to remind them of a past historical nich. When the Prime Minister ordered those medals to be struck, he was no doubt actuated by the very best motives, but we think the money so expended could have been put to better uses. Parents will have cause to remember these precious medals, because Jane will be spanked for purloining Jack’s in order to replace her own, etc., etc.
