GENERAL CABLES.

London, Sept. 17. The “Daily Express’’ learns that disaffection aboard an outwardbound British cruiser (which is not named) —the result of a punishment task on August 12 —led to the bulk of the gun-sights being thrown overboard. The culprits have not been discovered, although stringent measures have been taken. London, Sept. 17. According to the French newspapers, the reason of the Kaiser not crossing the Franco-German frontier was the receipt of a warning that two inhabitants of Alsace had left Muleauseu (in Alsace-Lorraine) with the intention of assassinating him. London, Sept. 17. The Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr. Clarke) addressed an influential and representative gathering of clergy and laity at Glasgow University relative to the reunion of Presbyterians and Anglicans in Australia. Professor Cooper, who presided, declared that the Home Presbyterians were deeply sincere, and readily understood that the Reformed Churches in Australia needed to close their ranks and husband their resources of men and money. Archbishop Clarke said union must not be rushed lest their haste should breed fresh schism. Dr. Meiklejohn applauded the results already achieved in Australia, and said he believed they would produce permanent effect. Dr. Marshall, the Moderator, in thanking Archbishop Clarke for his address, said the occasion was very important, and it was possible that it would prove historic.
