BURNING FATALITY.
Timaru, September 21
About 1.30 on Sunday morning a fire was discovered in one of a row of small wooden shops at Fairlie. As there were no fire appliances, four shops and the building used as a temporary post aud telegraph office since the destruction of the railway a few weeks ago were burned. The block was owned by Mr H. Fraser, and occupied by Sutherland and Phillips (butchers), H. Fraser (auctioneer), Mrs Watts (general store) and Parkes (draper). The building adjoining was temporarily occupied by the Bank of New Zealand, and was considerably damaged.
At Pleasant Point on Saturday evening the wife of Mr F. Medlico.tt, aged 40, was burned to death, it is believed through her clothes being ignited by a flask of kerosene used in lighting a fire. She was alone in the house for some time, and her husband, on returning, found the body in the passage with most of the clothes burned off.
■ At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.
