The Union Company’s steamers Karon (leaving Newcastle for the Bluff to-morrow) and the Wairuna (leaving Westport this week for Melbourne) —both unusual courses for the company’s boats to take—are instructed to keep a sharp look-dut for the Loch Lomond. The Maoriland Company is also being asked to permit the steamer Taieri, which leaves Greymouth this week for Melbourne, to assist in the search. Auckland, September, 21. The Premier telegraphed the Mayor the congratulations of the Government upon the anniversary of Auckland City, expressing the hope thgt its splendid progress and development may continue and be accentuated, as he feels sure it will be, in the years to come, 1 Auckland, September 21.
At the Onehunga Court to-day Mr Northcroft, S.M, gave judgment in the case in which Mr Mclntosh, headmaster of the Public School, was charged with assaulting a pupil by caneing him. The Magistrate said he was of the opinion that the punishment was excessive, and not for sufficient cause. Defendant erred in not asking the boy why he was late before punishing him for that offence. Defendant announced that he wished to appeal, and was fined £5 and costs, £4. 7s. Invercargill, September 21. There have been no bankruptcies in Invercargill during the past nine months. Two bankrupt labourers, who gave their address as Invercargill, were recent arrivals whose liabilities were incurred before coming here.
