THE COST OF A BANQUET.
At Saturday’s meeting of the Horowhenua County Council the bill in connection with the recent banquet tendered by the Shannon . people to Mr John Stevens, M.P., was received. The desire to make the costs cover the ceremony of opening the Sbannou-Moutoa bridge did not find favour, as beyond coach hire and a few other expenses nothing could be debited to the bridge part of the It was pointed out by Cr Venn-''’ that the Council was against any public ceremony in opening the bridge, but the Shannon committee—to, use Cr Venn’s words—“took the bitin its teeth ” and said they would have a public opening. The Council afterwards voted cm the condition that the Foxton Borough Council and the Mauawatu County Council shared in the expense. The Foxton body voted five guineas. The Mauawatu body declined to shoulder any expense. In addition to the foregoing resolution another was passed to the following effect That a copy of the_( resolution re Shannon-Foston bridge opening be sent to the Mauawatu County Council, and a statement of debit balance alter crediting the /15 from Shannon committee and the £5 5 s from Foxton Borough, with a request that Mauawatu Council will contribute a pro rata share of such balance ; also that a copy of - the above-mentioned resolution be sent to the Shannon committee.
