The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, September 15, 1908. LIGHTING MAIN STREET.

The Borough Council spent much time at last night’s meeting in discussing the class of lamp-posts to be erected in the centre of Main Street for illuminating purposes. It was agreed that something of a more ornamental nature was required other than the old-fashioned lantern and post. Cr Jenks protested against the centre of the principal street being disfigured with old-fashioned gas lanterns, and we heartily endorse his sentiments, Cr Stiles suggested a compromise by using the present lamp-posts, and forming a concrete base up to, say 3ft, and erecting suitable fixiijgs at the top to carry the over-hanging globes. We feel sure -that townspeople would not complain were the Council to

spend an extra sum in erecting lamps that will be an ornament rather than an eye sore to our principal thoroughfare. We do not think the Council could do better than purchase lamps as submitted by the Wellington Gas Company.
