BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the above was held last night, in the Borough Council Chambers. Present : His Worship the Mayor (B. G.' Gower Hsq.), and Crs G. Coley, F. E. Jenks, F. W. Frankland, G. Stiles, and S. H. Baker. Apologies for absence were > received from Crs G. Gray, and P. Hennessy. Correspondence was read from the Treasury, notifying the gazetting of the ,£4OO loan for the purpose of rebuilding portion of Wirokino Bridge. From Messrs Scott, Niven and Co., Ltd., Palmerston N., submitting prices for street lamps complete, viz., £5 ss. extra lamps £x 15s each. A further quotation was received from A. F. Martin, at £4 12s 6d per lamp. The Wellington Gas Co. previously submitted drawings of lamps suitable for Main Street, of a more elaborate kind. The local gas proprietory did not submit a price.—A lengtbly discussion ensued as to the kind of lamps that should be erected in Main Street —Cr Jenks objected to the “ old-fashioned tin box arrangement ” in the main thoroughfare. He advocated large globes, and contended that the extra cost in purchasing same would be warranted. —Crs Coley and Frankland agreed with Cr Jenks. —Cr Stiles suggested the ordinary lamp post with a concrete foundation up to say 3ft, with overhanging globe top, —The Mayor consented to make an inspection of street lamp in Palmerston and it was decided to deal definitely with the matter at a special meeting. Mr de Bidder was granted permission to cart timber to his property through the park provided that he makes good any damage incurred to trees etc., and that be also be requested to take necessary steps to prevent sand from drifting. It was pointed out that the owner of a house property in Main Street had not made provision for right-of-way for sanitary purposes, as was stated in a letter to the Clerk.
The Mayor said that on hearing
that the Rev. Mr Mason was visitV ing the district for the purpose of locating artesian water, he had instructed the Clerk to invite him to visit Foxton but his whereabouts could not be located.—Cr Jenks said the rev. gentleman was in the Marlborough District. His visit to Foxton should not be lost. —Cr Stiles suggested that the Rev. Mason be invited by the Anglican persuasion to exchange pulpits with the local vicar.—The Clerk was instructed to ascertain his whereabouts and endeavour to secure a visit.
The overseer’s report and time schedule, the latter giving details of time on each job, was read and adopted. A brief report was received from the nuisance inspector with a promise of “ something more further on,” which led some Councillor to interject a remark about mountains and mole hills. Accounts amounting to 2s were passed for payment. Cr Stiles moved and Cr Baker seconded that the formation of footpath recommended by the overseer from Manchester House to Thynne Street, be carried out, also the continuation of same to Jenks Street.—Carried. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Coley, to repair pump at the cemetery, and also to erect notices warning persons against plucking flowers from the plots. It was decided to sue for all rates unpaid on the xst October, without further notice. The tender of Messrs Jackson and Swift, for the formation of Futter Street (£7O), was accepted. Gr Baker moved, and Cr Frankland seconded, “ that in view of the unsatisfactory state of the valuation of the borough, this Council hold a special meeting on Tuesday, 29th inst., for the purpose of considering same, and discuss the sub-division of the borough.”—After a short discussion, the resolution was carried.
