LINKING THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.

Levin-Foxton-Greatford Route. Supported by Manawatu County. At the meeting of the watu County Council yesterday a letter was received from the Levin Borough Council stating that at a public meeting held there a resolution had been passed as follows: That this meeting is of that the time has arrived when the Government should seriously consider the advisability of constructing the proposed railway from Levin to Martou, via Foxtou, believing that such a work would be of great benefit to the main trunk x system of this Island, and would further open up a block of country profitable to the Railway Department. This meeting further urges the Borough Council to impress upon the Government the necessity of at once taking the matter in l and and inviting the co-operation of the local bodies more immediately concerned, viz., Marlon and Foxtou Borough’ Councils, Manawatu aiid Horowhenua Couly Councils, and Rougotea and Bulls Town Boards.” The letter further stated that they were desirous that a large deputation ol local bodies and settlers interested should wait upon the Prime Minister and Minister for Railways at an early date, and asked the Manawatu County Council to send a delegate or delegates. Some discussion followed, and most of those present signified their intention of supporting the movement. “ There will be a great howl from the Palmerston people,” said Cr Kendall. “Let them howl!” said Cr McKenzie. “We have helped them with their hospital in the past, and if they are going to adopt that attitude they will get no more votes for money from me. We have always looked upon Palmerston North as our centre, and I should be sorry to see a spirit of retaliation fostered, but they are going to say ‘We have got a railway and you are not to have one,’ then we will have to do something.” It was decided that the chairman and Cr McKenzie be appointed delegates to co-operate in the matter.
