The debate on the Education
Bill came to an abrupt termination shortly after i o’clock this morning, when the Government were defeated on an amendment moved by Mr Wilford, that an addition be made to a certain clause to the effect that school books should be uniform throughout' the Dominion. The Minister for Edncation said that he could not accept the amendment, but the hour being late there was no discussion. The amendment was carried against the Government by 30 to 23. Orr'the result of the division being announced, the Minister stated that he was not prepared to accept the alteration. He at once moved to report progress, and this being carried the House rose amidst a general bu;;j of excilement amongst members. Mr Wilford carried an amendment to the same effect during the discussion on the Education Estimates on August 27. He also succeeded in carrying a similar amendment on the Estimates on the same date last year. The division list was as follows :
