FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.

Prime Minister Again Interviewed.

Mr Hennessy, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, received the following further communication from Mr John Stevens, M.P., last night: — “ Wellington.—Have just interviewed the Prime Minister, respecting harbour proposals. He says Chamber’s suggestion respecting construction of new wharf has introduced new and complicated matters requiring careful consideration. I have written him on this subject and several other points of importance, also transmitting your telegram. He has promised to give the question fullest consideration. I must now stale that it is a physical impossibility to arrive at any "satisfactory conclusion upon an important question of this kind by letter or telegraphic correspondence. I hoped, however, if Foxton were placed in the same comparative position as Nelson Harbour Board, this would be satisfactory, but on looking up statutes I find that Nelson has taken rating powers not only for the city, but a large portion of country districts, but I do not favour any proposal for rating in our case. lam satisfied that we are slowly gaining ground towards some equitable agreement with the Government, which must necessarily take time. I can now realise the Government’s position is very difficult. The Prime Minister is, howeyer, anxious to do Foxton fullest justice. Will communicate further result when I receive Ministerial reply to my letter. —John Stevens.”
