HARBOUR BOARD BILL.
Our readers are aware that the promoters of the above Bill intend to hold an indignation meeting as a protest against the unfair treatment of the Railway Department in refusing to concede wharfage dues to the Board when constituted. The President of the Chamber of Commerce and Mr J. Stevens, M.P., have done their utmost to induce Cabinet to treat the vital clause in the Bill dealing with revenue on a basis of justice, and not precedent.. Mr Stevens has again been in communication with Cabinet, and in a telegram to Mr Hennessy yesterday, stated that Cabinet would make a definite decision in reference to the financial provision. In the face of this information, it would be unwise to hold the proposed indignation meeting until Cabinet’s mind has been ascertained. In conversation with Mr Hennessy this morning, he stated that a truce had been declared until further information came to hand. In justice to Mr Stevens, we would point out that he is fighting strenuously to secure what the promoters desire.
