AN INDIGNATION MEETING

The council of the local Chamber of Commerce are not satisfied with the treatment of the Foxton Harbour Bill at the hands of responsible Ministers. The Minister of Railways has set his face against granting the wharfage dues to the Board, when constituted. His argument is that to mete out justice to Foxton in this respect, would create a precedent, therefore the profits earned by the port must continue to swell the profits of the working railways. The Minister’s sense of justice in this respect is unworthy of a statesman. Because certain other ports of the Dominion, are not receiving what they are justly entitled to, is no reason why Foxton’s demands should be denied. Such an argument is ridiculous and it opens the eyes of the people to the peculiar methods of swelling the revenue of the working railways. The Council have convened an indignation meeting to be held in the Public Hall on Tuesday evening next when the whole question will be reviewed and the Minister’s action criticised. We hope every man and woman will make a point of attending the meeting which will be interesting and educational.
