The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1908. LO, WE ARE UNDONE!

The oracle, otherwise our Palmerston morning contemporary, has made some more remarks in reference to the proposed Levin-Foxton-Greatford railway. The meetings recently held at Kevin and Marton, touching this subject, have perturbed the oracle’s mechanism. We cannot pass over, or treat lightly, the utterances of this maker of governments, because he is a friend and counsellor of Kings and rulers. Pressmen marvel at his wonderful “scoops.” By the way, didn’t he see, while paying his respects to Admiral Sperry —■ and other small potatoes —at Auckland recently, Foxton’s banner of welcome to the fleet? _ And didn’t he direct attention to the Manawatu port in the chart-room of the flagship when exchanging chewinggum with the Admiral ? Of course he did. When visitors of the Crown visit the Manawatu, well, the oracle of the M.D.T. is indispensible. Bearing all these facts in mind, any utterances made in reference to our proposed Harbour Board and railway scheme, which reach the public per medium of the above source, must be authentic. Well, we are caused unrest in reference to the following words of wisdom which were uttered quite recently by our contemporary in reference to the projected railway:—“ In spite of the confidence expressed, and the fact that in some sections of the railway service the line would be

favoured, we do not think that it will be constructed for. many a year to come, if at all. Apart from the mistake of making railways coastal, the poll of population is all for keeping the line in its present position—and it would be folly to move from such gathering grounds as Palmerston and Feilding and to get further from the Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa. Once the Main Trunk Bine is finished with there will be a great many much more necessary and important railway works than this deviation to require the doing.” 80, we are undone !
