Wanganui, August 30. At the Police Court this morning Letitia Broard was charged with having abandoned an infant under the age of two years. This was the outcome of the finding of a child in a coal-box. The evidence showed that a young woman gave birth to an illegitimate child in Dunedin. In response to an advertisement asking for some person to adopt the infant, Mrs Broad offered to take the infant for That sum was eventually paid, together with ,£xo for legal expenses. Mrs Broad brought the child to Wanganui, and deposited it in a coal-box. The accused was committed for trial on bail. Auckland, August 30.
By the Navua from the Eastern Pacific news came from Papeete of a disaster to the barque Eton Hall, bound from Newcastle to Valparaiso on August 9th. She was picked up by the Tamarii Tahiti, in long. 144 west, lat. 34.3 south, and put into Papeete. When the master was about to abandon Eton Hall two men, members of the crew, broached a demijohn of rum. One stabbed the other to death. The prisoner was lodged in gaol at Taviti. Auckland, August 31.
The Lord Sefton arrived from San Francisco and Apia but failed to bring any news of the Aeon, which had not been reported at Apia when the Lord Sefton left on August 21.
