TENNIS.
The formal opening of the local tennis courts for the season took place yesterday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by the Patron of the club, F. W. Frankland Esq., in a happy speech. Afternoon tea was served by the lady members, after which the Patron presented the trophies to last year’s competition winners, as follows Ladies’ doubles, Mrs C. and Miss E. Collins (set of spoons and photo frame); ladies’ singles, Miss McMillan (candlestick); combined doubles, Miss E. Collins and Mr Orwin (hand mirror and razor strop); gents’ doubles Messrs Orwin and Wanklyn (shaving cup and sleeve links); gents’ singles, Mr Macdonald (bedroom clock). The Patron referred in complimentary terms to the good work done by last year’s committee, and particularly to the ladies. On the motion of Mr Clemett, the patron was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
A very pleasant afternoon was spent by players and spectators.
