THE BAKERS’ STRIKE.
Cases Before the Court.
Wellington, August 24,
The cases arising out of the Bakers’ strike are being heard by the Arbitration Court to-day. Andrew Collins, Secretary of the Wellington Bakers’ Industrial Union of Workers, was charged with aiding and abetting the strike. Defendant in his evidence said that while he was secretary of the Union two resolutions having regard to the strike were passed in June. He did not to any of the picketing. When the strike had been decided upon he told the men that he would stand by them, but he warned them from his experiences of strikes in the past that the moment they interfered with free labourers in any way except by moral suasion they would lose public support, and that if they went beyond moral suasion, he would leave them at that moment. He never went a picket, and never used moral suasion.
Application is also being made for the enforcement of the award against forty-three bakers. Judgment against Collins has been reserved.
