TANGI AT MOUTUITI.
The taugi over the remains of the late Mrs Aparima was brought to a close on Sunday, when the body was interred. After the burial, which took place tv. 0 hours before the time appointed, visitors —pakehas and Maoris, — were invited to partake of dinner at the Motuiti pah. Europeans were present from all parts of the district, and an excellent bill efface was presented, including roast joints, stewed eels, mutton birds, puddings, sweets, etc., which was done ample justice to. After dinner, several of the leading Maoris delivered speeches of welcome to the pakehas, and particular pleasure was expressed at the presence of the Mayor of Foxton (B, G. Gower Esq.) and Dr Adams. • Short* speeches in reply were made by the Mayor, Dr Adams, Constable Woods, and the Editor of the Herald. Mr N. Heta, who officiated as master of ceremonies and interpreter, treated all the visitors with the utmost courtesy and hospitality. Great interest was taken by the visitors in the cooking operations, particularly the uncovering of the umus or ovens, wherein the joints and vegetables were “done to a turn.” Two native ministers were in attendance, and performed the ceremony at the graveside. A pleasing feature, which was commented upon by Constable Woods during his remarks, which were received with marked “ Kia Oras ” by the natives, was the absence of intoxicating liquors.
