SUPREME COURT SITTINGS.

The Supreme Court criminal sittings was opened to-day. Three persons are charged with robbery under arms (3 charges), breaking and entering and theft (two charges), and assault with intent to rob. Two other persons are charged with breaking and entering and theft. Two persons are charged with perjury, one with bigamy, two with theft from the person, one with assault causing bodily harm, one with horse stealing, one with the illegal use of an instrument, one with indecent assault, and five come up for seutance from the Lower Court, mostly for theft and burglary. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court commenced to day, before Mr Justice Cooper. In his charge to the Grand Jury, the Judge said there were a considerable number of cases to be investigated, but none ot them were of an exceptionally serious nature, although he regretted to say that of 17 cases there were six against morality. The Grand Jury found true bills with respect to the following charges; — Wallace Herbert Stewart, forgery (new trial). John Griffin, indecent assault. Arthur Nankivell, criminal assault.

Ellen Johnson, attempted illegal operation. William Gunn M’Kay, theft (two charges). James Smith, alias Griffo, theft from the person. George Oram, breaking, entering, and theft. Daniel Murphy, theft. Elizabeth Black, alias Grant, alias Freeman, theft from the person.

Daniel Morgan, theft from the person. William Edmund Mackie, assault and robbery and theft from the person. Henry Ballantyne, alleged indecency. Henry Mather, theft. James Madder and Henry Mather, theft. William West, alias Westphal, attempted criminal assault. John Chalker, theft from the person at Pahiatua. Edward Thomas George Saul, alias Edward Hughes, was set forward for sentence on a charge of having forged the name “A. J. Dutch,” to cheques for £6 and Prisoner was sentenced to two years’ hard labour. William Morgan, for theft, was sentenced to nine months, and Gustav Rudolf Fiecken, for the theft of a bicycle at Dannevirke, was sentenced to twelve months.

Henry William M‘Kay, who had admitted ten charges of theft of guns from his employers, Messrs E. W. Mills and Co., was the first prisoner to be dealt with. A verdict of guilty was returned and prisoner was sentenced to imprisonment for nine months on each charge, with hard labour; the sentences to be concurrent.
