While endeavouring to alight from a swiftly moving tramcar in Upper Symonds Street last evening, Miss Whitehead, a young woman, aged about 22 years, whose parents reside in Litchfield Street, Ponsonby, fell and sustained such severe injuries to her head that she died within four hours after the accident. Gore, August 17.
A man named Ellis burst a blood vessel at Waikaia railway works this morning. He was just going to start work when the mishap occurred. Napier, August 17.
The cases in which Leslie Fowler, William Slack, and Matthew Johnson were charged with behaving in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace, at Hastings (the outcome of the hostile demonstration against the police after the hearing of some betting cases), was before the Court to-day, when defendants applied for a change of venue to Hastings. This was vigorously opposed by Inspector MacDonell, and the police offering no evidence, the cases were dismissed. Wellington, August 17.
Col. Loveday has received a cable slating that the Onehunga cadet, Col.-Sergt. Friar, who has been sent Home to represent New Zealand, was second in the rifle competition for Lady Guinness’s trophy at Bisley, open to all cadets of the Empire.
