MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting was held yesterday. Present: —Crs Thos. Masters, E. Barter, J. Dalton, J. Henson, G. Beudall, R. B. McKenzie. Cr Bendall presided. From Magistrate’s Office, Palmerston North, re intention of River Commissioners to make an inspection.—Cr Wilson to represent the Council. • From Mr John Stevens, M.P., stating that the Premier had consented to receive deputation re extending borrowing powers. From Horowhenua County Council, asking Mauawatu County Council to procure necessary gear for keeping the Shanuon-Foxtou bridge clear of debris in flood time, employ necessary labour and charge the cost to Horowhenua. — Agreed to. From Inspector of Whirokino bridge, inquiring whether fence at the approach to the bridge should be repaired.—Cr Barber and overseer to attend to the matter.
The Treasurer reported balances of various accounts as follows :—General account dr 12s id ; loan account cr 9s 2d. The amounts available for ex - penditure in the several ridings to March 31st, 1909, were as follows : —Sandon riding, £22 2s gd ; Mt. Stewart, 6s gd ; Waitohi, is nd; Rongotea, 13s 7d ; Carnarvon 17s 3d ; Kawa Kawa, ,£3370 14s 4d ; Awahou, 10s 9d ; Whirokino, £26 Bs. The Tramway Manager reported a debit balance of £4 os id on the last month’s working, chiefly caused by increased price of coal obtained from Palmerston North, as coal boats could not get in to Foxton. The volume of traffic in goods and passengers had been satisfactory. The principal items had been—grain tons, merchandise tons, metal 360 yards, timber 13,800 feet, and fares £6 15s.
