THE HAWEA REPORTED.
A Broken Tail Shaft.
Dunedin, August 12
The Union Steam Ship Company received a cablegram from its Sydney office to-day which stated that the steamer Hawea had her tail shaft broken on July 30. During the first twenty-four hours after the accident the Hawea drifted n deg. north and 35 miles east. On the second day she drifted 9 deg. north, and 30 miles east. The second and third officers and a boat’s crew left the Hawea at noon last S iturday 45 miles south-east from Ball’s Pyramid, and landed at Lord Howe Island. The news apparently was then conveyed by steamer from Lord Howe Island to Norfolk Island, and thence cabled to Sydney. The landing party reported that there were ample provisions aboard the Hawea, and all hands were well.
Captain Todd, of the Flora, now out in search, proposed to visit Three Kings, thence proceed towards Norfolk Island, thence 29 deg. south and zig-zag to Lord Howe Island, and thence to Newcastle. The following of this course should enable the Flora to find the Hawea.
The Haupiri, which was to search for the Hawea, has now been recalled to her running. The Rakauoa leaves Auckland to-morrow, and will shape her course direct to Lord Howe Island.
The Moaua, leaving Sydney today, will deviate from her course to "keep a lookout for the drifting steamer, prolonging the search, if necessary, so as to arrive at Auckland on Tuesday.
