THE LIBRARIAN’S SALARY.
At last night’s Borough Council meeting, the librarian applied for an increase of salary from £lO to per annum. It was pointed out that at present he was given free housing, lighting and firing plus —Cr Jenks considered the present salary paltry. Visitors should also be allowed not only to peruse papers and magazines but any books to read while in the building. This privilege was allowed in other towns. Cr Hennessy said that would mean keeping the librarian on duty all day. —The Mayor did not think any person would be able to get a grip of a book by a perusal of a few pages.—Cr Coley : Oh, he’d get a grip of the book alright, and walk away with it. He then said he had seen at a certain mill two bags of books belonging to the library, and which had never been returned. This occurred some years ago.—Cr Hennessy : The same thing is going on now. —Cr Coley also complained that magazines and illustrated papers were being stolen from the reading room. After further discussion, it was decided to grant the librarian the increase in salary asked for.
