A man named Emil Bach, supposed to be a German, committed suicide by shooting himself in Wellington street on Saturday. Deceased spoke very little English and had been despondent through inability to get work. Ah Jing, the Chinese alleged to have been shot by his mate, died this morning. Christchurch, August 10.
The Inspector of Police has revealed a telegram from Leeston stating that a farmer named John Chambers had hung himself in an outhouse on his farm yesterday. He had been in low spirits, and ailing for some time past. Gisborne, August 10.
The Union Company’s steamer, Hawea, is now a fortnight out from Newcastle to this port. It is feared she may have broken down.
The Flora leaves Auckland today to search towards Newcastle for her. The Haupiri has been instructed tc zig-zag from East Cape towards Cape Maria van Dieman. Wellington, Last night.
Captain P. C. Read is in command of the overdue steamer Hawea, and he has with him the following officers: —Chief, Mr B. B. Irwin ; second, Mr P. A. Williams ; third, Mr W. Cossentine; chief engineer, Mr J. McLean ; second, Mr A. Carmau ; third, Mr F. Ritson.
