FOOTBALL.
Anglo-Welsh v. Auckland.
The above match was played at Alexander Park, Auckland, on Saturday. Glorious weather conditions prevailed'. Some 20,000 spectators attended. The ground was dry and the game was fast and fairly interesting. Britain was without the services of several of her “cracks,” through injuries. In the first spell, Hayward scored for the home team. In the second spell, Herring and Murray crossed the British line, the game ending Auckland 11, British nil.
At the dinner to the teams on Saturday, Mr Devore, President of the Auckland Union, said that if the international visits came too close they would lender to produce a sameness of play. What was wanted was for each end to develop a style of its own which was impossible with frequent tests. Mr Harding said that although beaten badly they could promise New Zealand a good go next Saturday. He congratulated the Auckland team for their clean good display of honest football. They were led in the South to believe that they were going to get a pretty warm time from the teams in this part, but while the last two had been willing they were most enjoyable.
