CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the council of the above was held in the Secretary’s office last night. Present: — Messrs P. Hennessy (Chairman) Phillips, Jenks, Walker, Barnard, Perreau and the Secretary (Mr Rae-Howard). The following new members were elected :—Messrs A, S. Easton, Alex. Speirs, J. Hillary, W. Bock, F. Easton, E. Bird, C. H. Podmore, T. Betty and A. Jouson.

On the motion of the Chairman seconded by Mr Perreau, the Secretary was instructed to write to the Secretary of the Postal Department directing his attention to the fact that the Premier, in the course of his speech at Greytown, stated that all telephone exchanges possessing 50 subscribers and over were to be kept open between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. As Foxton possessed more than the required number mentioned by the Premier, the necessary instructions be given to have extension of time observed here, and further that the wish of the subscribers be acceded to in respect to telephone communication with Wanganui.—Carried. Qn the motion of Mr Perreau, seconded by Mr Walker, it was decided to Inform the local stationmaster that the Chamber has been approached by local business people asking that a request be made to the Department to provide two K. wagons instead of one as now in use owing to great inconvenience caused through one waggon coming down at night and going back early next morning. The time thus allowed for unloading and loading being insufficient within working hours. - Carried. Dissatisfaction was expressed with the laxity of members in not paying up their subscriptions and in view of the recent calls on the Chamber’s funds, the hope was expressed that members would pay ftp without delay. Several other matters of a formal value were discussed, and accounts passed for payment and the meeting rose.
