THE MANAWATU SEAT.
Mr Edward Newman. Mr Edward Newman, who. is a candidate for the Manawatu seat at the general election, is well known in the electorate, says the Rangitikei Advocate, but a few details as to his career may not be out of place. Mr Newman took up land in the Turakina Valley in 1882, and after having cleared it of bush farmed the property until 1902, when he cut it up. He has done a great deal of work on local bodies, having been elected a member of Rangitikei County Council in 1884. He retained his seat till 1904, with intervals of retirement to visit England. As a member of Wanganui Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, of which he was for some time Chairman, and of the Wanganui Education Board, Mr Newman did good public service. From the inception of the Farmers’ Union Mr Newman was an active member. He has been Chairman of the Mar ton branch, a member of the Wellington Provincial Executive, and acted as Parliamentary agent for the Union for several sessions. At present Mr Newman is farming about 500 acres at Upper Tutaemii, a portion of the Dunsinane estate.
