A Sad Stats of Affairs. Auckland, July 3. Detective Coony has returned to Rotorua with a half-caste girl of 15, whom Rua had taken as his wife. Rua’s son and the council of 'elders refused to give up the girl, threatening to cut off the head of the girl’s father and shoot the police party. The detectives informed them that if they used force troops would be sent todestroythem and their pah. After considerable delay the Maoris handed the .girl over. Rua’s people are very short of food, and there are only a few men in the village, but there are a number of women and children, who are half-starved.
