SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the above was held in the school house on Thursday evening. Present; Messrs Hornblow (chairman), T. Betty, Bullard, Henderson, Hennessy, Perreau, and Rev. G. K. Aitken (secretary). Accounts were passed for payment.
The headmaster’s report for the month was not presented. The order of visitation was drawn up by the secretary as follows : June, Messrs Aitken and Betty; July, Messrs Bullard and Coley; August, Messrs Henderson and Hennessy; September, Messrs Hornblow and Perreau; October, Messrs Read and Aitken; November, Messrs Betty and Bullard ; December, Messrs Coley and Henderson ; January, Messrs. Hennessy and Hornblow ; Februaxy, Messrs Perreau and Read.
The visitors, Messrs Aitken and Betty, for last month, reported as follows :—We visited the school on two occasions; on the former we found the rooms in a very unsatisfactory state, but were informed that the whole school was to undergo a thorough cleaning during the holidays. A subsequent visit showed a very great improvement in the condition of the rooms. The same thing applies to the vv.c’s., and we recommend that they be lime-washed inside ; writing with chalk and pencils be obliterated, and that it be made a punishable offence for any scholar to write or draw figures in or upon the walls of the said buildings. We also recommend that a quantity of disinfectant be procured ; that the school floors be swept every night. The trees in the school ground have been trimmed satisfactorily. We have to draw the attention of the committee to the unlevel condition of the grounds, particularly close to and around the school building, and that the necessary amount of gravel be procured and spread for, say a width of 12 feet around the school building, and graded iu order to carry off surface water. We would suggest that this space be tarred and rolled at a later date. Some of the overflow piping from the tanks need attention. The whole grounds require levelling and grading, iu order to get rid of the surface water.
The Chairman congratulated the Committee upon its excellent report, which was received. It was resolved to adopt the suggestion re cleaning of rooms, lime-washing w.c’s., and purchasing a quantity pf disinfectant, and the master’s attention was drawn to the “handwriting on the walls.”
It was resolved to make an application to the Board for a grant for gravelling round the school building, and also for levelling the school grounds. The Secretary was instructed to have the overflow pipes attended to. In reply to the Chairman, the. headmaster stated that, as far as he was aware, the school tanks had not been cleaned out since the new building was erected. The visitors’ report was adopted.
The Secretary was instructed to procure a letter book, and other stationery required.
