A PLEASING CEREMONY.

“ Many moons ago,” as the old Maoris say in computing time, a very interesting event happened in our worthy Mayor’s connubial slate. A little girl happened on the scene. The then Council said things to the Mayor at that time of a complimentary nature, which the Mayor smilingly acknowledged. But a custom exists, which is to present a silver cradle to the “ first citizen ” in commemoration of such eveut. For many moons the cradle was overlooked —by the Councillors, of course. Then a time came when the services of Mayor Gower were required for a

further term of office and the cradle question was again revived and the necessary article procured. Cr. Baker, who by the way, is picking up a few points in view of an approaching interesting coupling event, and by virtue of his being the Councillor longest in office, was deputed to make the presentation at last night’s meeting. He performed the ceremony in a tew well chosen remarks. His Worship suitably acknowledged the gift and a certain councillor admonished the Mayor, in, the words of President Roosevelt, to “keep the cradle full.” The cradle is of solid silver, mounted on oak and bears the following inscription : —‘‘ Presented to B. G. Gower Ksq. Mayor, by the Councillors of Foxton Borough, 1905.”
