BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Ordinary Meeting.
The monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: The Mayor (B. G. Gower, Esq.), Crs Grav, Jenks, Baker, Stiles, G. Coley, F. W. Frankland, Wilson and Heunessy.
Correspondence was read from : H. W. Clime, offering his services to report on a scheme for water and drainage for the borough, and setting forth the [[names of boroughs where he had carried out similar works. —No action taken. A lengthy legal opinion was read from Messrs Moore and Barnard, solicitors, in reference to a resident rescuing certain cattle from the ranger while they were being driven to the pound. The ranger was tendered the driving fees by the owner of the stock, but refused to accept the money. —It was pointed out that the Council had passed a resolution instructing the ranger to impound straying stock, and to refuse driving fees. Alter further discussion it was decided to make a test case of the matter, and back up the resolution and the action of the ranger.
Dr, Adams reported a case of typhoid fever in Union Street.
A letter was read fro n the engineer of the Foxton Gas Syndicate in reference to plan ol retii'ul: .... ■, and submitting reasons why gi.j mains should be laid in the centre of the streets instead of the sides, and stating that the mains shown in the plan approved by the Council were in the centre of the streets.—The Clerk said the plan referred to was not approved by the Council because it did not show the mains to all the existing street fights.—Cr Wilson was of opinion that the centre of the road was just as suitable as the road sides for the mains.—Cr Coley said it was the custom in other places to lay the gas mains about six feet distant from the kerbing. — The Clerk was instructed to send a telegram to the company asking for a reply to letter sent on the 22nd May.
.It was decided to protect the pegs of the standard survey within the borough as suggested by the Tands and Survey Departure it. The cost of the road grader per day to the borough,said the Clerk in reply to a councillor,was £2 5s per day. Accounts amounting to ,£lO9 9s 5d were passed for payment. In answer to Cr Jeuks the Clerk said that the revenue from the rating on the , unimproved value would be the same as obtained under the old system.
