PROPOSED NEW STREET.
Councillor’s Generous Gift. At last night’s Borough Council meeting, the Mayor said he intended to "move a resolution authorising the Council to purchase a strip of land chain wide, for the purpose lof forming a road to connect Nye and Spring Streets. He said people were put to great inconvenience by having to go round either by way of the cemetery or along Johnston Street, to connect with Union Street. There was no outlet to either the Avenue or Union Street from Coley, Gladstone, or Futter Streets, except by the route he had mentioned. A road to connect Union Street with the Avenue should have been constructed 20 years ago. The proposed road he suggested was to continue and connect Spring Street with Nye Street. —Several councillors spoke of the necessity for opening up such a road, but thought the co.inection should be made more towards the town.
Cr Colej'’ said if Futter Street was continued from Coley Street to Union Street, he would give to the Council the necessary land required, and further, would cart the metal without cost to the Council. Cr Jenks asked if any ratepayers had petitioned for the road ? The Mayor replied that there was no petition, but the work was of much importance, and should be undertaken by the Council. If the connection were made between Nye and Spring. Streets, it would, of course, not serve so large a population as the continuation of Futter Street would. —After further discussion, Cr Frankland moved, and Cr Stiles seconded, That in consideration of Cr Coley giving the land for roadway through his property, and carting metal for same free of charge, the Council agrees to continue Futter Street to Union Street, conditional on loan for same being passed. The resolution was carried unanimously .
