A TYPOGRAPHICAL DISPUTE.
Advice From the Court.
At Wellington on Thursday, the case Inspector of Awards v. Robert Edward Hornblow, of Mangaweka, was heard, it being an adjourned one in which respondent was charged with having on and before October 31st, 1907, broken an award of the Court by employing a female at the work of typesetting. The award referred to was made on August 6th, 1907, and directed, inter alia, that only two classes of labour should be recognised in the work, namely, journeymen and apprentices or youths.
His Honour: Does the union want to drive females away from the work or what is it ? Mr Brown: I think there are some women doing the work in Taranaki on a Patea paper. The Inspector said that the position was rather peculiar. The Wellington Typograhhical Union had instituted the proceedings, and yet he had found in looking up the papers that some time ago it had actually given a girl a permit to do this very work! His Honour said that the best thing would be for the Inspector to communicate with the union on the subject, the case standing over in the meantime. If the union insisted on driving females out of their work the Court would have to consider some alteration of the award.
The case was then adjourned until the next sitting.
