SPRING FLOWERS.
A sunbeam plays upon the earth, And, smiling, whispers to the birth Each infant flower—Then, with a kiss Leaves it to grow in scented bliss. And now upon the verdant floor Myriad steps through Nature’s door Come treading silently and coy ; Thrilling with hope and fragrant joyHere, peeping buds ope half-closed eyes And watch the sunset as it dies Within the clouds. —Then drooping heads Slumber awhile on velvet beds. They die —The early morning dews Rise into space, and tell the news Of Summer’s advent ; and the death Of heralds with their perfumed breath. —G.Y.W. Foxton.
