THE DECALOGUE FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Education Boards’ Views. Replies have now been received from almost all the Education Boards, which were asked if they were willing to have copies of the Decalogue hung in the public schools. All the Boards throughout New Zealand gave favourable replies. The following is a syllabus of answers:— The Auckland Education Board offer no objection to copies of the Ten Commandments being displayed in the schools of the district. The Hawke’s Bay Board state that any school wishing may exhibit a table of the Ten Commandments on the walls. The Otago Board propose to obtain a legal opinion as to their powers under the Act to provide and display in their schools the charts referred to. The Greyraouth Education Board state that in their principal schools the clergy give religious instruction, They suggest communication with the School Committees of the Grey district. The Wanganui Board merely acknowledged receipt of the letter. The Westland Board deferred consideration. In the meantime the Government printer is to be asked for specimens and prices of the Commandment charts.

The Wellington Board has instructed teachers to exhibit the Commandments on the walls.

The North Canterbury and South Canterbury Boards thoroughly approve of the proposal, but prefer to give discretion to the School Committees. It is understood that the Southland Board is favourable, and are procuring copies of charts.
