SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the local School Committee was held in the school house on Thursday evening. Present: —Messrs Hornblow (Chairman), Hennessy, Bullard, Betty, G. Coley, Read, Henderson, and Perreau. The Headmaster’s report stated that the attendance during the last five weeks has been as follows: —242, 248, 222, 241, and 241. Several matters of minor importance were referred to. The report was received. —Messrs Aitken and Betty were appointed visitors for the month.

Mr Coley reported that the iron fence had been erected according to specifications and the account for same was passed for payment. Mr Hennessy stated that he had paid a visit of inspection to the Wanganui technical school, at the invitation of Mr G:aat, and refeired in praiseworthy terms to that institution and to the educational benefits afforded to pupils.

The Chairman stated that he had received a communication from Mr Braik, urging the Committee to stall the school, eyen if in a humble way. Mr Braik said there might be extremely little real technical work done at first, but a beginning would presumably lead to something belter. — The Chairman stated that if the services of recognised instructors could be obtained, the school should be a success.

Mr Perreau offered to canvass the town tor pupils, which offer was accepted, and the secretary was instructed to draw up the necessary particulars for Mr Perreau. An application from the school cleaner for a small increase in salary, was agreed to, and the head master consented to draw up particulars of the duties required to be carried out by the cleaner. The matter of trimming the trees in the school grounds was left in the hands of Mr Coley. Accounts were passed for payment and the meeting rose.
