MACMAHON’S PICTURES.

Extraordinary Success. A packed house greeted Macmahon’s superb picture show in the Public Hall last night. The unanimous verdict of the audience was ‘' the best animated pictures we have ever seen.” We are prepared to bracket only one other entertainment of a like character with Macmahon’s, and that is West’s —and there is nothing to choose between the two. The audience was transferred to Switzerland and gazed upon the snowy Alps, saw the shepherd’s cottage, and watched the two children visit their father who was tending a flock of sheep, saw them leave him on their homeward journey ; the snow storm overtakes them, and they are lost, and sink exhausted to the earth. The mother’s anxiety is depicted when the father returns without his children. The search by the faithful and well-trained St. Bernard dogs reveals the whereabouts of the snow-covered little ones and the rescue and resusitation and homecoming is splendidly pourtrayed. The audience waits a few moments after the conclusion of the picture before they realise where they are, and then follows a prolonged outburst of applause. The humorous pictures are funny enough to make the proverbial cat laugh.—“ Her first bicycle ride ” sent the audience into fits of laughter. The point to point steeplechase was another realistic picture. “ Easter Eggs” provided some wonderful illusions. The remaining pictures were all first-grade, and were shown with an entire absence of flicker. Miss Lorraine Tansley, the talented N.Z. contralto, contributed several vocal items, for which she was vociferously encored. This evening there will be an entire change of programme, and we have no doubt there will be another bumper house.
