GENERALITIES.

The steamer Randani from Fiji brought further news of the shooting of several people by a mad Indian at Navua. He was employed on a plantation by the Colonial Sugar Company. He suddenly became impressed with the desire to plunder and armed himself with a gun and attacked and shot at Mrs Swann who was alone in her house. Mrs Swann was only slightly injured. The Indian then sallied forth, shooting right and left, but being much under the influence of liquor, his aim was by no means good. He shot fatally Mr Pender, an overseer employed on the plantation, shot one Indian dead, and seriously injured another. Several Europeans had narrow escapes. The mad man was pursued by the police, and was eventually shot dead.

There were 21 suffering from tuberculosis. About the same time 1 examined 60 pigs belonging to -the same farmer, and found that 3y were affected. Two or three days later I examined another 100 pigs of the same man, and 60 of them were tuberculous. None of the pigs were over nine months old. A few months later I again went to the farm, and found another 50 pigs had become affected.

Ten-year-old Fred was going to a party for the first time. “ Here’s half-a-crown, Fred,” said his father ; “ if it rains, be sure you take a cab home.” But Fred reached home drenched through. “Why didn’t you take a cab?” said his father. “ I did, father,” said Fred ; “ and I sat on the box all the way home. It was glorious ! ”
