THE IONIC’S HEMP CARGO.
Purchased by Mr Wm. Ross. To be Re-shipped to Foxton. At Wellington yesterday Mr W. Ross, of the local Rope and Twine Works, completed negotiations for the purchase of the whole of the hemp in No. 1 hold aboard the lonic, which recently caught fire and was flooded. The consigment consists of 260 tons (1300 bales). The hemp is to be transhipped to Foxton, and the first consignment of 20 or 30 trucks will arrive on Monday night. A gang of men were put on this morning, to erect drying fences alongside the race course. So far as we are able to ascertain, there are only about 30 bales damaged by fire. The whole of the hemp, however, is soaked with water. The re-conditioning of the hemp will provide local employment for a large number of hands for the next month or six weeks,|which exemplifies the old adage that it’s an ill wind that blows no one any good. In making the purchase, Mr' Ross took a heavy financial risk, and it is hoped that his venture will have a profitable result. The quantity of fibre above mentioned represents the season’s output from Jtwo mills.
