BOROUGH COUNCIL
Special Meeting.
A meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last evening, for the purpose of Slicking rates, and discussing streetlighting matters. Present: Mayor Gower, and Crs Coley, Gray, Hennessy, Stiles, and Baker. An apology for absence was received from Cr Frankland. Cr Jenks read the declaration, and took his seat on the Council for the first time since his election. The reason for his absence from the Council table was that he had the misfortune to meet with an accident to his foot, from which he is just recovering.—The Mayor, in welcoming Cr Jenks, stated that Cr Jenks was Mayor wUen His Worship first took a seat at the Council table, and had welcomed the Mayor to the Council. He had now much pleasure in returning the compliment. His Worship had pleasant recollections of past meetings during the the time Cr Jenks had occupied the mayoral chair. He regretted the incident that had precluded Cr Jenks from attending previous meetings.—Cr Jenks suitably replied, and stated that it would be his endeavour in the future, as in the past, to assist the Council in its deliberations to the best of his ability. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, notice was given to levy and strike rates, particalars of which are advertised elsewhere in this issue. STREET LIGHTING. The subject of street-lighting was then brought on, and apian showing the gas reticulation was laid on the table, and examined by Councillors. Cr Baker objected to the plan, because he stated it was not a correct copy of the original, as the gas mains in the original plan extended farther than were shown* on the plan now presented. The Clerk stated that the original plan was approved by the Council, and the reticulation was shown by a red line along the various streets. It was pointed out that One lamp was situated within the County boundary, and its upkeep should be maintained by the County, if served. Exception was. also taken by Councillors to the mains being laid in the centre of the street. Cr Baker proposed, and Cr Coley seconded. That the Gas Company be advised that - the Council takes exception to the ft plan of the proposed gas mains as now laid on the table, as if is not a copy of the previous plan approved of by the Council,” subject to amendment made on September 3rd, 1907. . Further, that this _■ Council objects to the. laying of the mains in the centre of the street, but approves of the work being at once started with the mains on either side of street from 6ft to Bft from water-table.—Car-ried.
A very lengthy and desultory discussion ensued in reference to where the lamps should be placed.—Cr Hennessy said the cost of lighting and maintaining the lamps should be ascertained before the number was decided upon. —Cr Stiles said the meeting had been called to decide where the lamps should be placed, and the number required. It was only wasting time putting^.the subject off.—Cr Jenks : Bathps should be erected at every inter-section.—Cr Coley: I’m going to object to all the Council’s funds being spent in the Main Street.—Cr Gray: Put everything in the back streets. — Finally, Cr Hennessy moved, and Cr Jenks seconded, That no further action be taken in regard to the number of lamps until the gross cost per light be ascertained and the clerk write to the company re same.—Carried. A letter was read from the engineer of the Hutt Borough Council re artesian water supply, and giving particulars of the Hutt scheme and cost of same. The Council then rose.
