A SAD AWAKENING.
A young man named Thomas Richard Chamberlain, 18 years of age, appeared at the Palmerston S.M. Court on Tuesday, to answer to a charge of unlawfully assaulting a woman. The youth pleaded the old excuse —drink. He had been drinking throughout Saturday, and remembered playing cards in a hotel at three o’clock in the afternoon, but after that his mind was a blank till he woke up in gaol the following morning. Meanwhile he had met two young women on Raugitikei Line, and after asking them the way to Awahuri had caught and held one of them, while the other fled. The screams of his, captive brought Messrs Perrin and Dixon to the rescue and accused was arrested. Mr Gifford Moore, who appeared for accused, said that it was the lad’s first appearance before the Court, and pointed out that if he were sent to gaol it might start him on a career of crime. Messrs R. S. Abraham and S. Abraham, J.’sP.„who were on the Bench, found accused guilty of common assault while under the influence of liquor, and fined him ,£5 inclusive of witness’ expenses.
